This bronze coin was the first issue of the Republic of Cyprus after it gained independence. The obverse features the Republic's shield of arms, which includes a dove, surrounded by a wreath and the date "1960" (the year of independence), with the issue date "1963" above it. The reverse depicts a stylized ancient merchant ship on waves, with the denomination "5" in the upper left.
