This official Ersttagsblatt (4/1989) commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the renowned German painter, scenic designer, and typographer Willi Baumeister (1889–1955). Issued by the Deutsche Bundespost on January 12, 1989, the 60 Pfennig stamp features his vibrant abstract painting titled "Bluxao I" from 1955.
The detailed biography on the reverse of the sheet highlights his significant influence on 20th-century art:
Early Career: Born in Stuttgart, Baumeister studied under Adolf Hölzel and formed a lifelong friendship with artist Oskar Schlemmer.
Artistic Evolution: His work evolved through several distinct phases, including his "Wall Pictures" (Mauerbilder) from 1919 and his "Machine Pictures" (Maschinenbilder) starting in 1924.
Persecution and Resilience: In 1933, the National Socialist regime dismissed him from his teaching position in Frankfurt, labeling his work "degenerate". He continued to paint in secret and researched ancient painting techniques during this period.
Post-War Leadership: After 1945, he became a central figure in the cultural reconstruction of Germany, serving as a professor at the Stuttgart Academy and publishing his influential theoretical work, "The Unknown in Art" (Das Unbekannte in der Kunst).
Design: Both the stamp and the first-day cancellation were designed by Heribert Burkert. The cancellation features a clean, minimalist design reflecting Baumeister's modern aesthetic.
