This commemorative postage block celebrates the centenary of German cinema, tracing its origins back to the pioneering work of Max and Emil Skladanowsky. Issued by Deutsche Post on September 6, 1995, the block was designed by Professor Ernst Jünger.

The issue highlights several masterpieces of German film history across three distinct stamps:

80 Pfennig: Features the iconic robot Maria from Fritz Lang's silent science-fiction epic, Metropolis (1927).

100 Pfennig: Depicts a scene from Der Untertan (1951), based on the novel by Heinrich Mann.

200 Pfennig: Shows a haunting visual from Wim Wenders' modern classic, Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin, 1987).

The background of the block features a historical photograph from the first film screening in the Berlin Varieté "Wintergarten" on November 1, 1895. The official Ersttagsblatt (ETB 30/1995) includes a first-day-of-issue cancellation from Bonn, marking this significant cultural anniversary.
