This commemorative issue belongs to the series "Wappen der Länder der Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (Coats of Arms of the States of the Federal Republic of Germany). Released by the Deutsche Bundespost on June 16, 1994, the 100 Pfennig stamp features the official coat of arms of Saxony-Anhalt alongside an outline map of Germany highlighting the state's location.
The official Ersttagsblatt (21/1994) provides a deep historical analysis of the state's heraldic symbols:
Upper Section: Features a ninefold gold and black divided shield with a green rue crown (Rautenkranz) slanted across it, derived from the historical Prussian Province of Saxony.
Top Right (Heraldic Left): Displays a black Prussian eagle on a silver field.
Lower Section: Depicts a black bear walking atop a red, crenelated wall with an open gate, representing the historical Free State of Anhalt.
Design and Issue: The stamp and the specialized first-day-of-issue cancellation from Bonn were both designed by Professor Ernst Jünger.
