Abstract Modernism: The Erich Buchholz Centenary

This commemorative issue celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the German avant-garde artist Erich Buchholz. Issued by the Deutsche Bundespost on January 8, 1991, the 60 Pfennig stamp features his 1922 work, "Drei Goldkreise im Vollkreis blau" (Three Gold Circles in a Full Blue Circle).

The official Ersttagsblatt (5/1991) details Buchholz’s significant role in the development of non-objective art, highlighting his exploration of geometric forms and architectural relationships. Designed by Sigrid Denkhaus, the stamp is presented with a first-day-of-issue cancellation from Bonn, featuring a postmark that reproduces the artist’s own signature.
