This official Ersttagsblatt (25/1987) presents the first issue of the "Sehenswürdigkeiten" (Sights/Landmarks) definitive series, which began on November 6, 1987. This long-running series replaced the "Burgen und Schlösser" (Castles and Palaces) series from the 1970s, showcasing significant cultural and technical achievements of Germany through unusual artistic perspectives.
The stamps in this initial release, designed by Sibylle and Fritz Haase, include the following landmarks:
30 Pf – Schloss Celle: Serving as the residence of the Dukes of Braunschweig and Lüneburg from 1388 to 1705, this palace features architectural styles ranging from the 14th-century Gothic core to grand Baroque renovations from 1670–1680.
50 Pf – Freiburger Münster: A parish church since the 12th century, its tower, completed in the early 14th century, is often called the "most beautiful tower of Christendom". It stands 114 meters high with an elegant openwork spire.
60 Pf – Bavaria München: Commissioned by King Ludwig I and erected between 1843 and 1853, this colossal 1560-quintal bronze statue is a masterpiece of technical engineering standing above the Theresienwiese.
80 Pf – Zeche Zollern II Dortmund: Built between 1898 and 1908 as a model facility, it features a grand Machine Hall with modern steel-frame construction and Art Nouveau elements designed by Bruno Möhring
