This 1991 special edition set, titled "Tierschutz: Bedrohte Seevögel" (Animal Protection: Threatened Sea Birds), was issued by the Deutsche Bundespost to raise awareness for endangered coastal and inland water birds. Designed by artist Joachim Rieß, the collection features four distinct species: the Kampfläufer (Philomachus pugnax), the Zwergseeschwalbe (Sterna albifrons), the Ringelgans (Branta bernicla), and the Seeadler (Haliaeetus albicilla). Released on June 4, 1991, the series highlights the critical need for habitat conservation in reunited Germany, particularly for rare breeding pairs like the Sea Eagle. Each stamp is officially mounted on an Ersttagsblatt (First Day Sheet) with a clean Bonn first-day-of-issue postmark, featuring a specialized bird motif that matches the spirit of the collection.
