This special commemorative sheet from the definitive series "Frauen der deutschen Geschichte" (Women in German History) honors two legendary figures who dedicated their lives to peace and the struggle against oppression. Issued by the Deutsche Bundespost on February 14, 1991, the stamps feature:
Sophie Scholl (150 Pf): A key member of the "White Rose" (Weiße Rose) student resistance group, who was executed in 1943 for her courageous stand against the Nazi regime.
Bertha von Suttner (200 Pf): A world-renowned pacifist and the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1905), celebrated for her influential anti-war novel "Lay Down Your Arms!".
Both portraits were designed by Professor Gerd Aretz, utilizing historical photographs as templates. This official Ersttagsblatt includes a first-day-of-issue cancellation from Bonn, bringing together these two symbols of moral courage on a single collectible document.
