This commemorative semi-postal series, titled "Für die Wohlfahrtspflege" (For Welfare Care), was issued by the Deutsche Bundespost on October 15, 1987. It is the 38th issue in a series where the surcharges benefit the Freie Wohlfahrtspflege, supporting various non-statutory welfare organizations. Designed by Professor Fritz Lüdtke, the set showcases historical gold and silver smithing masterpieces preserved in German museums.
The series includes:
50+25 Pf – Roman Armband (4th Century): A gold bracelet set with emeralds from a woman's grave, created using the opus interrasile technique. It is housed in the Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne.
60+30 Pf – Ostrogothic Buckle (6th Century): A cast gold buckle with incised ornaments, representing the specialized jewelry of East Germanic tribes. It is located at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.
70+35 Pf – Merovingian Disc Brooch (7th Century): A silver and gold filigree brooch decorated with almandines and glass beads, found in a noblewoman's grave. This piece is also held in Cologne.
80+40 Pf – Bursenreliquiar (8th Century): A gold, bag-shaped reliquary traditionally associated with the Saxon leader Widukind. It is decorated with gemstones and cloisonné enamel and is kept at the Staatliche Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin.
