This commemorative semi-postal series, titled "Für die Wohlfahrtspflege" (For Welfare Care), was issued by the Deutsche Bundespost on October 14, 1993. These stamps represent the 44th edition of a long-standing tradition where surcharges benefit the Freie Wohlfahrtspflege, supporting various social and humanitarian organizations across Germany.
The series, designed by Hannelore Heise, features traditional regional costumes (Trachten) from across the country. As detailed in the official Ersttagsblatt (First Day Sheet), the collection includes:
80+40 Pf – Rügen (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern): Showcases coastal attire, with women featuring amber jewelry and men in wide legwear typical of seafaring populations.
80+40 Pf – Föhr (Schleswig-Holstein): Highlights elaborate silver jewelry and breast chains, reflecting the historical prosperity of the North Frisian Islands.
100+50 Pf – Schwalm (Hesse): Depicts 19th-century attire influenced by military uniform elements for men and "Krinolinen" city fashion for women.
100+50 Pf – Ochsenfurt (Bavaria): Features festive attire from the Lower Franconia region.
200+40 Pf – Erna-Mode (Lusatia): Represents the unique cultural dress of the Sorbian minority.
